Most of this spisode isnt a filler. The part with Kuranai (spelling) is not filler, the part where shika and his team start to walk off and get caught by Tsunade, not a filler. The part of this episode thats a filler is the part where Shikamaru is playing Shougi with his Pop. That's the only part not in the manga.

Perphaps he tried to use rasengan with his element chakra

Also, this episode was extremely well done..except for the fact that Shikamaru should be smoking instead of flicking a damn lighter..

the one thing i hate about this episode is that for some reason in the anime skikamaru can't smoke, in the manga he smoked until they killed higan (or whatever hes called) but here they just show him messing about with the lighter.

loved the part of shikamaru and his father playing shogi. i was waiting for shika to get emotional. The lighting and everything looks great. I'm really annoyed about the censorship on shikamaru smoking though. he smokes in the manga but not anime. personally i think shikamaru smoking really adds something sentimental and special to the whole deal. damn those censorships....

also those who think this is a bad ep or a filler, you guys really are quite immature. its not all about OMG NINJA FIGHT!! KILLL BAD GUYS!!! AWESOME MOVES!! you no. this episode is way more deeper emotionally than any other episodes ive seen in a long time! so shut up idiots!

This has got to be one of the best episodes i've seen in naruto. Looks like they've hired a different animation studio to do this special bit. The art direction was just excellent and the drama is superbly executed, it was presented in a mature manner because the episode dealt with a deeper subject matter, it’s sheer brilliance.

That's probably why the haters don't get it; they don't exactly have the intelectual capacity to grasp these things. All they want to see is face bashing, might as well smash theirs on a rock or something. Go grow some pubes kids, and brains while your at it...

There is bad episodes and good once, seriously, deal with it, they cant make a never ending fight for many hundred episodes. Everytime a boring epi comes everyone complain, why bother? Fine say its bad, but to get angry and say offensive things... Little over the line. If you made naruto, and you saw all those crap comments, how fun would it be? Have some respect. Sometimes they just have to put in a filler.

I wanted to thank you guys for posting the Naruto episodes for us. I know most people get upset when episodes are posted late, but they forget that you are doing us a favor. There's a lot of work involved in subbing an episode. So I don't mind if an episode is late, because without you guys I wouldn't be watching Naruto at all. Just wanted to give you guys encouragement when most people seem to be complaining about something.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the term filler apply to an episode without any real connection to the ongoing narrative - Naruto was ful of filler episodes, some good, others really bad but Shippuden seems to have stayed more or less on track. I thought that this was a great episode, especially for fans of Shikamaru - that shogi game with his dad was one of the most well done moments I've seen for a while. It's not all about blood and fireworks you know

Look of this episode is different.. it look like it was created on some cheap animation software or the staff has changed.

First they kill off Asuma, then Jiraiya, and worst of all Kakashi... It's getting pretty lame to follow

you know sometimes people are so stupid, this isnt a filler episode, first and second, it is leading up to a critical part in the manga, not to mention this part was in the manga. I personally loved this episode, it gave a real good foresight into what is about to happen, and we actually got to see some feeling out of shikamaru.

Don't care on people's views on smoking or how the anime is trying to cast away from manga this is just blatant censorship. So asuma can cut someone's head off but shikamaru can't have a smoke. WTF!

i dont get you people whining about there being fillers. If there werent, you would already have finished watching this whole anime and thatd be that. And no i dont think it was boring, ofcourse when a big character like asuma dies theres gonna be grieving..
the opening song is fine aswell, people never see the good things but always simply whines about the 'bad ones'

i like the fact there branching away from naruto sure hes the main character but he gets boring we all know he like to run out first and how hes always the underdog and whatever else but think its intersting to get more people in not to mention emotions of a death like late make it even more interesting but i think they are also branching away from naruto to let him change a little if your watching him constently you wont notice little changes because they happen so slowly but when you leave him alone for awhile it gives him time to change drasticly making it even more intersting when we finnally get the story back to naruto
